Agribusiness is one of the main drivers of the Brazilian economy, but it is not represented in this same proportion in the financial market. According to managers dedicated to the sector, the lack of governance is the main cause of this gap. Companies in the agribusiness sector are aware of this and are working to modernize their structures, keeping in mind the opportunities they can achieve by becoming allied with economic agents.
Idalício Silva, agribusiness strategy manager at AZ Quest, is one of the specialists who share this vision: "One of the answers we came to is that there was a lack of governance in the sector, which had a lot of growth, but lacks leadership, which limited access for companies to enter the Stock Exchange."
Marcos Bertomeu, agribusiness investment fund manager at Fator, states that the path to the growth of Brazilian agribusiness lies in investing in productivity, which occurs in the sector through inputs and machinery.
"All of this happens through credit. What is important to bring funds to the segment is to reduce the information gap between the financial market and agribusiness. There are several financing options in this regard, big techs with information on specific areas, price data. All of this should contribute to the sector's development," highlights the manager.
The specialists are participating in Fiaagro Experience, an event held by Grupo Suno this Friday (28th) at the Stock Exchange, which brings together the main players of national agribusiness in debates about the directions and opportunities of this sector, one of the main sectors of the Brazilian economy.
Last year, the agribusiness sector declined 1.7%, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). One of the factors for this drop was the adverse weather effects in the South region, such as last year's drought.
However, in Itaú's view, the agribusiness GDP should surge 10% this year. According to IBGE data, grain production could reach around 302 million tons, a record for the segment. Therefore, the current harvest is being called the 2023 super harvest.
Paulo Mesquita, portfolio manager at Riza Asset, reinforces that agribusiness is a "market of opportunities" for investors, whether through real estate funds focused on this sector or through Fiagros.
"It is an opportunity for large producers with resources that can be long-term. The investor would hardly have access to this type of instrument if it weren't for the Fiagros. Those who used to do this type of operation, for example, were the large banks, which sell an LCA or a CDB and do what they want with the money. They don't necessarily invest in agribusiness," analyzes Mesquita.
Vitor Duarte, CIO at Suno Asset, adds that with Fiagro resources being directed to medium and large agribusiness operations, banks can focus their operations on small producers, which facilitates their access to credit.
